Where the chamber can actually sit

The room is small. Typical mill-terrace coal cellars have one dry corner you still use, a hatch or stair soffit off the front room, two party walls, and on a back-to-back a third shared wall with the house behind.

  • Prefer the lowest corner that is not the only walking space and not the meter. If that corner is the only place you store coal-era leftovers, we say so now.
  • Keep off the rear wall on a back-to-back where we can. A pump hard against the house behind is how Highfield and Lawkholme hear every cycle through one thickness of mill masonry.
